Intranasal ESKETAMINE

At Anderson Clinic, we are proud to expand our innovative mental health services with SPRAVATO® (esketamine) nasal spray, an FDA-approved treatment for adults with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and depression with suicidal thoughts.

SPRAVATO is a breakthrough medication that works differently from traditional antidepressants. While most oral medications target serotonin or norepinephrine, SPRAVATO is a form of ketamine that affects glutamate, a key neurotransmitter involved in mood regulation—offering rapid and potentially more robust symptom relief.

Unlike intravenous (IV) ketamine treatments, which are administered via infusion and used off-label, SPRAVATO is FDA-approved and delivered as a nasal spray in a certified clinical setting under direct supervision. Both treatments are grounded in ketamine science and offer rapid relief of depressive symptoms, but SPRAVATO’s FDA approval brings a major advantage: coverage by most commercial insurance plans, making this cutting-edge therapy more accessible to patients.

What to Expect During SPRAVATO® Treatment at Anderson Clinic

At Anderson Clinic, we’re committed to making your SPRAVATO® (esketamine) treatment experience as comfortable, safe, and effective as possible.

Your Journey Begins with a Simple Evaluation
Before starting treatment, you’ll meet with one of our provider for an evaluation to determine if SPRAVATO is the right option for you. During this evaluation you’ll have the opportunity to discuss your previous mental health treatments, current symptoms and ask any questions about Spravato you may have. If recommended, our team will then work directly with your insurance provider and specialty pharmacy to seek coverage and authorization—helping remove as much administrative burden from you as possible.

Treatment Schedule
Once approved, your SPRAVATO treatment will start with an induction phase of twice weekly treatment for 4 weeks followed by weekly treatment thereafter (for at least one month). If effective continued treatment may be required.

What Happens During a Treatment Session
Each session takes place in a private, comfortable setting at our clinic. You will self-administer the nasal spray under the supervision of a licensed medical provider, and then rest and relax for about two hours while our medical team monitors you closely.

We encourage patients to bring headphones and calming music to enhance relaxation during the session. To support the therapeutic process, we ask that you avoid working, using your phone, or engaging in distracting activities during treatment.

Important Safety Note: Because SPRAVATO can cause temporary sedation or dizziness, you must arrange for someone to drive you home after each session. Patients are not permitted to drive themselves.

If you have questions about the treatment process or want to find out if SPRAVATO is right for you, contact us today. We're here to support you every step of the way.

Spravato® vs. Intravenous (IV) Ketamine: What’s the Difference?

If you’re researching ketamine treatment or Spravato therapy in Cincinnati, it’s common to wonder how these two options compare—and which might be right for you. While Spravato® and intravenous (IV) ketamine are related, they are delivered differently and follow distinct clinical pathways. At The Anderson Clinic, we offer both Spravato and IV ketamine, allowing patients and providers to choose the option that best fits individual needs.

Key Differences at a Glance

  • Route of administration: Spravato is a nasal spray; IV ketamine is delivered through an infusion.

  • Regulatory status: Spravato is FDA-approved for specific depressive conditions; IV ketamine is used off-label.

  • Treatment flexibility: IV ketamine allows more individualized dosing; Spravato follows a fixed protocol.

  • Insurance coverage: Spravato is often insurance-covered; IV ketamine is usually self-pay.

What is Intravenous (IV) Ketamine?

esketamine versus IV ketamine

IV ketamine uses racemic ketamine delivered directly into the bloodstream through an infusion. This method has been used safely in medical settings for decades and is commonly offered “off-label” for conditions such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, chronic pain, and other mood disorders.
IV administration allows for precise dosing and flexible treatment protocols tailored to the individual. While IV ketamine is typically not covered by insurance, many patients value its customization and broader clinical applications.

Which Option Is Right for You?

Neither treatment is “better” in all cases. Spravato and IV ketamine serve different roles and can benefit different patients depending on diagnosis, treatment history, response patterns, and insurance considerations. Our clinical team helps guide patients through these options with a focus on safety, effectiveness, and personalized care.

If you’re searching for a REMS certified Spravato treatment center in Cincinnati or exploring IV ketamine therapy, we’re here to help you understand your options and determine the most appropriate path forward.
